The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific and regulatory agency within the Department of Commerce. Its mission includes providing daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings, climate monitoring, fisheries management, coastal restoration, and supporting marine commerce. In 1807, the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (the Survey of the Coast) was formed, the Weather Bureau was founded in 1870 and, one year later, the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries was founded. These three agencies were brought together in 1970 with the establishment of NOAA, an agency within the Department of Commerce.
