Ministry of Rural Development, India aims for sustainable and inclusive growth of rural India through a multipronged strategy for eradication of poverty. The ministry is responsible for implementing various programs for the upliftment of rural areas and enhancing the standard of living of people in these areas. The Department of Rural Development was established in 1974, it underwent several name changes and structural shifts over the years. It was finally named again the Ministry of Rural Development in 1999.
