The Department of Ocean Development (DOD) was created in 1981, then it was notified as the Ministry of Ocean Development in 2006, finally it was reorganized into the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) with a merger of the India Meteorological Department, the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Earth Risk Evaluation Centre, and the Ministry of Ocean Development.
