The Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) in Iceland, also known as Hafrannsóknastofnun, is the leading research institution in the country for marine and freshwater studies. It conducts extensive research on marine ecosystems, fish stocks, and environmental conditions, providing scientific advice to the government on sustainable resource management. MFRI plays a crucial role in monitoring and advising on the sustainable use of Iceland's marine and freshwater resources, ensuring their conservation and optimal utilization. It was established as a result of a merger of two inveterate Icelandic research institutes, the Institute of Freshwater Fisheries and the Marine Research Institute.
