Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited commonly known as GNS Science is New Zealand's geoscience guardian, and unlocks Earth's secrets. Their research helps New Zealand prepare for natural hazards and thrive in a changing world. With a proud 156-year heritage, they draw upon the legacies of the New Zealand Geological Survey (1865-1990), DSIR Geophysics Division (1951-1990), Institute of Nuclear Sciences (1959-1992), and DSIR Geology and Geophysics (1990-1992). In 1992, GNS Science was established under the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992.
