    The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) is the supreme audit institution of India, established under Article 148 of the Constitution of India. It is empowered to audit all receipts and expenditures of the Government of India and the state Governments, including those of autonomous bodies and corporations substantially financed by the Government. The office of the Comptroller and Auditor General had its beginnings in 1858, with the first Auditor General appointed in 1860. It was re-designated as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India in 1950 when the Constitution of India came into force.
