    The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) is primarily responsible for exploring and researching atomic minerals. These minerals are essential for various nuclear energy and strategic applications. It is the oldest unit of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), and was initially formed as the 'Rare Minerals Survey Unit' in Delhi on 29 July 1949. It underwent name changes to 'Raw Materials Division' and then 'Atomic Minerals Division' in 1958, with its headquarters moved to Hyderabad in 1974. In 1998, it was renamed as 'Directorate'.
