The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is responsible for the development, maintenance, and management of India's network of National Highways. Established by an Act of Parliament, it ensures the quality and expansion of the highway system to support economic growth. NHAI's activities include implementing large projects like the Bharatmala Pariyojana and overseeing the National Electronic Toll Collection system (FASTag). It develops and provides consultancy and construction services in India and abroad and carry on research activities in relation to the development, maintenance and management of highways or any other facilities. It was founded by an Act of Parliament, but became an operational, autonomous body in 1995.
