The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is responsible for the overall development and regulation of India's maritime transport system. This includes formulating policies for major ports, inland waterways, and the shipping industry, which encompasses shipbuilding, ship repair, and maritime education. It is tasked with increasing port capacity, improving infrastructure, and reducing logistics costs to make Indian ports globally competitive. It also oversees the implementation of various government initiatives, such as the Sagarmala Programme, to drive port-led development and connect coastal areas with the economic hinterland. It was initially formed as the Department of War Transport in July 1942, and over the years, it underwent several changes and reorganizations. It became the Ministry of Shipping in 2009 and finally renamed the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways in 2020.
