The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) is responsible for formulating and implementing policies related to housing and urban development. Its mandate includes addressing urban poverty, ensuring affordable housing, and developing sustainable cities. MoHUA achieves this through flagship programs like the Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). The ministry's work involves coordinating with state governments, planning urban transport, and improving sanitation and water supply. It also promotes institutional and governance reforms in urban areas to enhance the quality of life for all citizens. The Ministry was initially established as the Ministry of Works, Housing & Supply. Further, it underwent several name changes and bifurcations over the years and finally in 2017, the Ministries of Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation were merged to form the current Ministry.
