They explore resources, monitor volcanoes and earthquakes, and use nuclear science for a sustainable future. Their research helps New Zealand prepare for natural hazards and thrive in a changing world. With a proud 156-year heritage, they draw upon the legacies of the New Zealand Geological Survey (1865-1990), DSIR Geophysics Division (1951-1990), Institute of Nuclear Sciences (1959-1992), and DSIR Geology and Geophysics (1990-1992). In 1992, GNS Science was established under the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992.
