The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is India’s dedicated maritime law enforcement and rescue agency, entrusted with safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and maritime interests. It was created as a direct response to the increasing need for coastal security and anti-smuggling operations that arose in the 1960s and 1970s. The Coast Guard operates and coordinates closely with the Indian Navy and several other agencies.
