    Project Details

Unauthorised mining activities in Istmina, Colombia, have precipitated significant environmental degradation, compromising both local ecosystems and communities. Conventional surveillance mechanisms, predominantly reliant on optical satellite imagery, have encountered substantial challenges due to persistent cloud cover. In response to this, Capella Space, in collaboration with Geospace Solutions based in Ecuador, undertook a comprehensive study aimed at appraising the utility of high-resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for the detection and quantification of illicit mining operations within Istmina. The study's principal goal was to meticulously monitor temporal changes within the designated area to gauge the environmental impact attributable to unauthorized mining activities.
