    Project Details

Discovering the buried remnants of the late 19th-century Nelsonville Brick Company poses a unique challenge in the heart of Ohio's Appalachian region. Led by Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc., and involving Hocking College students, the project aimed to uncover buried structures from the late 19th century without traditional excavation. By employing GPR technology, specifically the Noggin® 500 system, the team conducted non-destructive surveys, revealing buried foundations of kilns and other structures. The project demonstrates the value of geospatial technologies in archaeology, offering precise mapping, cost efficiency, and educational opportunities while engaging the community in local heritage preservation.
