    Project Details

The Mississippi River serves as a lifeline for the U.S. economy. As the world leader in grain production, the US relies on this river to carry 60 percent of its harvest, amounting to more than $600 billion in annual economic activity. To maintain this vital waterway, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) employs advanced GIS-based systems, such as the eHydro enterprise platform and the Automatic Identification System (AIS), to monitor and manage 2,320 miles of shifting channels.

Key initiatives include conducting hydrographic surveys using sonar-equipped vessels to detect sediment buildup and shoaling, which can disrupt navigation. These surveys inform both immediate dredging operations and long-term engineering solutions like check dams. Additionally, the Corps produces Inland Electronic Navigational Charts (IENCs), where data is updated frequently for barge operators.

With tools like Python scripting for automating workflows and RIS for providing regular traffic insights, the Corps addresses the dual challenges of maintaining navigation channels and managing flood risks. These innovations ensure the river remains navigable, even under extreme conditions like drought or flooding, which threaten supply chains and economic stability.
