Sustainable Peat Utilization and Activated Carbon Innovation for a Carbon-Neutral Future using GPR

Source: Vapo Group
The Sustainable Peat Utilization and Activated Carbon Innovation initiative by Vapo Group (formerly Vapo Group) represents a forward-looking approach to transforming the peat industry in the face of climate goals. Peat, a raw material traditionally used in energy production, is now repurposed for high-value applications such as substrates for horticulture and activated carbon production. Whole new industry is growing in Finland around Activated carbon, a critical material for air and water purification, is predominantly imported in Europe, but Vapo Group aims to introduce a sustainable, Finnish-produced alternative, shifting from its previous Peat Energy Focus.
The project relies on collaboration with GTK’s expertise and research database. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology, combined with drone imaging, provides accurate data on wetland topography, peat thickness, and quality. This advanced data collection reduces time and costs, accelerating the utilization of peat resources while ensuring environmental sustainability. The project also focuses on studying greenhouse gas emissions and carbon storage mechanisms within wetlands, enabling a holistic understanding of peat’s role in carbon neutrality.
