Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction through Official Geospatial Data and Multi-Sensor Aerial Imaging in Croatia

Source: MDPI
The Croatian State Geodetic Administration, in collaboration with the Faculty of Geodesy at the University of Zagreb and the City of Zagreb, has launched the Multi-Sensor Aerial Imaging for Disaster Risk Reduction Assessment project under the EU-funded STOKIS initiative. The project shifts the focus from traditional cartography to functionally linked spatial databases that serve state and public sector authorities. LiDAR scanning across Croatia is creating a new high-accuracy Digital Terrain Model (DTM), while hyperspectral and thermal imaging of key river corridors supports flood risk modelling. The City of Zagreb serves as a pilot site for earthquake risk assessment due to its dense population and high seismicity, developing a methodology scalable to other urban areas. All collected data feeds into a Web-GIS portal, ensuring open, reliable, and timely access for disaster risk reduction.
