    Project Details

The National Geographic Institute of Belgium (NGI) and Belgian Defence formalised a comprehensive cooperation agreement in December 2023, marking a significant evolution from a former public procurement model to a long-term strategic partnership. This transition followed years of institutional discussions and was preceded by a February 2023 declaration of intent, co-signed by NGI and the General Intelligence and Security Service, which recognised and formalised existing joint initiatives. The new agreement establishes the NGI not merely as a service provider, but as a strategic partner within Defence, deeply integrated into the development of geostrategy and national security planning. The NGI, leveraging its scientific expertise and restructured role as a federal geobroker, now collaborates closely with Defence, also drawing on academic and military resources from the Royal Military Academy. Operational synergies are achieved through shared infrastructure, personnel exchanges, integrated defence assignments at the NGI, and mutual access to institutional frameworks and contracts.
