Smart Road Infrastructure and Asset Management with GIS Cloud: The Adelaide Plains Council Experience

Source: GIS Cloud
Adelaide Plains Council, formerly the District Council of Mallala, South Australia, has been utilizing GIS Cloud technologies since 2014 to deliver efficient services across its jurisdiction. Covering an area of over 350 square miles and serving a population of under 10,000, the Council has mapped over 60,000 features and implemented GIS Cloud solutions to manage infrastructure, environmental services, public health, and waste management.
The Council’s Road infrastructure and signage projects exemplify the transformative power of GIS technology. The initial project involved using GIS Cloud to inventory road conditions, addressing issues like potholes and cracked sidewalks. Field data was collected via smartphones using MDC, enabling real-time updates and photo documentation. Subsequently, a comprehensive road sign inventory project was undertaken to ensure compliance with traffic guidelines. These initiatives allowed for informed decision-making, proactive maintenance, and seamless collaboration between field crews and office staff.
