Smart Grid Transformation: Real-Time Monitoring with Wireless Sensors at Elvia

Source: Esri
Elvia, one of Norway's largest electricity providers, embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to digitally transform its power grid monitoring processes. The project focuses on deploying smart wireless sensors to monitor real-time heat signatures of approximately 28,000 distribution transformers and other critical assets. Traditional methods of temperature checks were sporadic, resource-intensive, and limited in scope. By integrating compact wireless sensors with the ArcGIS platform, Elvia can now capture, analyze, and act on real-time data about grid component performance. The sensors are strategically placed to detect temperature anomalies, enabling preventive maintenance and reducing the likelihood of equipment failure.
This proactive approach creates a unified operational view, replacing reliance on multiple systems. The seamless integration of GIS allows the team to visualize sensor data alongside spatial information, strengthening operational efficiency and communication across field and management teams.
