Earth observation technology is aiding in the safeguarding of blue carbon ecosystems, particularly submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), which are vital for aquatic ecosystem health. This ecosystem is highly efficient in capturing and storing blue carbon. In the European Union, monitoring marine waters' status is essential under various directives, and SAV health serves as a key indicator of marine ecosystem well-being. Sweden is using a satellite mapping tool to facilitate the monitoring and evaluation of coastal vegetation and biotopes, helping the country fulfil its national and international reporting obligations and protect the marine environment.
