Historic structures worldwide are undergoing significant monitoring efforts, often unnoticed by the general populace. Heidelberg provides a pertinent example, where a historic retaining wall from 1871 in the Old Town is currently under observation. Adjacent to this wall, construction of an underground car park is underway, necessitating excavation of a 10-meter-deep pit reinforced with bored piles. This construction occurs in close proximity to the historic retaining wall and its foundation.
In Heidelberg, situated along the Neckar river, the significance of this retaining wall extends beyond its historical value; it serves a crucial role in stabilizing slopes by restraining soil movement. To ensure the stability of reinforcement works, adequacy of securing measures, and preservation of the historic wall, ongoing monitoring is imperative. TPI Vermessungsgesellschaft mbH (TPI) embraced the responsibility of guaranteeing the structural integrity of a new underground car park beneath the existing historical structure.
