The project aimed to update the tree inventory of Hasselt, Belgium, by leveraging innovative LiDAR technology to support urban greenery management. Conducted in collaboration with local tree managers from De Beer & De Vos, the study focused on collecting detailed data about street trees (527) along a 2.5 km road. The survey captured critical characteristics such as tree height, crown diameter, crown volume, branchless stem height, and diameter at breast height (DBH).
The YellowScan Surveyor Ultra V2 LiDAR system was mounted on a vehicle using the Fly & Drive pod, allowing efficient data collection in an urban setting while navigating airspace and privacy restrictions. Two drives were conducted at 50 km/h, collecting a dense point cloud (1610 points/m²), resulting in a comprehensive dataset. Using this dataset, individual trees were geolocated, and their attributes were analyzed to evaluate pre- and post-pruning impacts. The approach enabled the creation of a digital twin for each tree, supporting long-term monitoring of growth and management interventions.
