Revolutionizing Stockpile Management: Accurate and Efficient Coal Volume Measurement with UAV LiDAR Technology

Source: YellowScan
The project aimed to modernize coal stockpile measurement at the Ladyzhinsky thermal power station in Ukraine, replacing outdated traditional methods (GNSS, Total Stations etc.), with UAV-mounted LiDAR technology. Using the YellowScan Vx-15 system, the survey team captured high-density point cloud data of the coal storage area within a single hour. This data was processed into detailed DTMs, DSMs, and 3D surface models, providing a precise and comprehensive analysis of the stockpile’s volume and geometry.
Traditional survey methods, including theodolite, were labor-intensive and posed safety risks, were replaced with a safer, faster, and more accurate solution. The technology’s millimeter-level accuracy ensured error-free volume calculations, saving millions of dollars for the client.
