Revolutionizing Avalanche Risk Detection: LiDAR Mapping at Trollstigen, Norway

In October 2021, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) hosted a proof-of-concept event to evaluate drone-based LiDAR technology for avalanche risk monitoring. The event focused on the Trollstigen region, known for its steep mountains and year-round snow cover. The project aimed to assess the feasibility of LiDAR-equipped drones for mapping avalanche-prone areas, comparing the results with traditional airborne surveys, and setting a benchmark for future avalanche risk assessments.
The Scandinavian Drone, Orbiton, and YellowScan team successfully completed three distinct missions in varying terrains. These ranged from a straightforward flight over fields and forests to a challenging operation at a snow-covered glacier (Site C2). Despite harsh weather conditions, including high winds and turbulence, the team captured high-quality LiDAR data, providing critical insights for avalanche monitoring.
