Rainfall Monitoring: Transforming Environmental Data Management in Orange County with GIS Solution

Source: GIS Cloud
Orange County, California, faced critical challenges in managing its watersheds and addressing persistent water shortages exacerbated by droughts. To improve decision-making and community engagement, the OC Watersheds Division transitioned from a cumbersome paper-based workflow to a fully digital system powered by GIS Cloud. This comprehensive solution enabled real-time rainfall and water level monitoring, streamlined data collection during field operations, and facilitated public access to rainfall data.
GIS Cloud Map Editor was used to visualize existing datasets and integrate multiple data layers, ensuring an intuitive representation of rainfall and watershed data. The ArcMap Publisher simplified the conversion of shapefiles and existing data for seamless integration with desktop GIS tools. The Mobile Data Collection tool empowered field teams to gather and upload data in real-time using smartphones and tablets, eliminating manual data entry and reducing errors.
With the REST API, the system was customized to push real-time data from over 80 monitoring stations onto dynamic maps, allowing instant updates and robust analysis. These maps and historical reports were made accessible to both internal teams and the public, ensuring transparency and data-driven decision-making.
