    Project Details

Southern Company, a major U.S. gas and electric utility, partnered with Satelytics to implement a pilot project focused on monitoring encroachments in transmission line corridors. The project aimed to provide a cost-effective solution for detecting unauthorized constructions within utility-owned right-of-way areas, where new buildings or other structures could pose significant risks to transmission lines. By utilizing high-resolution 50cm Pléiades satellite imagery and advanced AI algorithms, the project sought to identify early-stage construction activities that could be mitigated before they escalate into serious safety hazards. The AI-powered analysis detected changes in land use, including new barns, parking lots, pools, and houses, providing timely alerts for Southern Company to take appropriate actions. The use of remote sensing technology enabled Southern Company to efficiently monitor large areas, reduce on-ground inspection costs, and prevent potential downgrades of transmission lines.
