In the rugged landscapes of New Caledonia, a Pacific Island renowned for its biodiversity, a crucial economic activity clashes with environmental preservation. Nickel mining, a cornerstone of the country's economy, poses significant threats to fragile ecosystems and local communities. In response to mounting concerns, the Thio Town Council sought innovative solutions to monitor and mitigate the environmental impact of strip-mining operations encroaching on their doorstep. Leveraging advanced geospatial technologies, including high-resolution satellite imagery and remote sensing analysis, a collaborative effort involving Bluecham SAS, Maxar, and academic institutions was initiated. This case study delves into the strategic deployment of these technologies, offering insights into how real-time monitoring systems and data-driven insights are shaping sustainable development practices and safeguarding New Caledonia's natural heritage.
