ProRail, the organization responsible for managing the rail infrastructure in the Netherlands, faced a challenge with a projected 30% increase in daily train ridership by 2030. To accommodate this surge in traffic without building new physical tracks, ProRail adopted digital twin technology, creating a virtual replica of its entire rail network. This digital twin allowed ProRail to simulate various scenarios, optimize the use of existing infrastructure, and improve efficiency. By visualizing the network in real-time, ProRail could enhance maintenance protocols, identifying the minimum number of track closures required to perform necessary upkeep safely, thereby reducing disruptions and maximizing operational capacity.
