Nationwide InSAR-Based Monitoring System for Water Management Infrastructure in Hungary

Source: NV5 Geospatial Software
Hungary's water management infrastructure, much like in many countries, faces the dual challenges of aging facilities and increased risks due to climate change. In response, Hungary developed a comprehensive nationwide InSAR monitoring system as part of the FIR Earth Observation Information System (Földmegfigyelési Információs Rendszer). This system was implemented to monitor 63 strategic water facilities, encompassing 83 individual objects such as sluices, weirs, floodgates, and dams. Utilizing freely available Sentinel-1 SAR satellite data, the system employs advanced InSAR processing techniques, such as Persistent Scatterers (PS) and Small Baseline Subsets (SBAS), to measure millimeter-scale surface deformations.
