Nationwide Heavy Rainfall Hazard Information Mapping for Climate-Resilient Germany

Source: NHESS – Copernicus.org
The Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), in cooperation with the German National Meteorological Service (DWD), has developed Germany’s first nationwide heavy rainfall hazard information map. The project integrates digital terrain models, meteorological records, and land use datasets to simulate and visualize the impacts of extreme rainfall events. Two scenarios were modelled: a rare 100-year return period event based on DWD’s long-term meteorological data and an extreme scenario with 90 mm/h rainfall intensity. These hydro-numerical simulations compute expected water depths and flow velocities across Germany with 1-metre grid resolution, offering an unprecedented level of detail. The maps are hosted on a publicly accessible platform, providing citizens, planners, municipalities, and emergency services with reliable information to mitigate flood risk and adapt urban development to climate change.
