Rahway, New Jersey, a city of 30,000 residents, embarked on a digital transformation to modernize its infrastructure management, particularly focusing on its stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. The city’s Engineering & Land Use Department, responsible for overseeing public works and land use, historically relied on outdated paper-based methods, which included "flat files" to document and map critical infrastructure. These flat files, while containing valuable historical data, had become cumbersome to update, difficult to share, and prone to quality degradation over time. Recognizing the need for a more efficient system, City Engineer Jacqueline Foushee spearheaded the adoption of an enterprise GIS solution to streamline and digitize records requests and infrastructure management. With the support of Colliers Engineering & Design, Rahway successfully implemented ArcGIS Field Maps to digitize and geospatially map the entire stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, transforming the city's approach to infrastructure management and setting the stage for future expansion of GIS capabilities across city departments.
