Mobility for Everyone: GIS Solutions for Enhancing Accessibility for People with Disabilities in Zagreb

Source: GIS Cloud
The "Mobility for Everyone" project, initiated by a group of passionate geography students from Zagreb, Croatia, aimed to empower people with disabilities by addressing urban mobility challenges. Recognizing the lack of adequate data regarding accessible infrastructure, the team devised an interactive map to aid in navigating the city. Their focus was on identifying handicap parking spaces, public institutions, and other essential facilities across four city districts: Donji Grad, Trnje, Trešnjevka Jug, and Trešnjevka Sjever.
The project leveraged GIS technology to collect and visualize data, creating an intuitive digital map accessible to individuals with disabilities and their caregivers. Over 800 locations, including 500 handicap parking spaces, were mapped within two and a half months. The team utilized mobile devices for efficient data collection, ensuring spatial accuracy through GPS tracking. The gathered data was then organized and styled using the GIS Cloud Map Editor, where redundant information was removed, and accessibility-related features were highlighted for better user experience.
