Plastic pollution in the oceans, amounting to 8 million tons annually, is a major environmental concern. These plastics degrade into microplastics and accumulate in ocean gyres. A notable example is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is located between California and Hawaii. Researchers at the University of Michigan developed an innovative approach using satellite data from NASA's CYGNSS mission. By comparing ocean surface roughness and wind speed data, they mapped daily microplastic concentrations, providing the first global, high-temporal-resolution insights into this issue, including seasonal variations.
