Look Up and Live App: Leveraging GIS for Hazard Awareness and Electrical Safety in Queensland

Source: Esri Australia
Energy Queensland, serving over 2.3 million customers across northeastern Australia, implemented a pioneering safety initiative called Look Up and Live, using GIS technology to address growing safety concerns. The initiative focused on providing workers in high-risk industries, such as agriculture, aviation, and construction with real-time access to power line locations, voltages, and safety guidelines.
A public web application, lookupandlive.com.au, was launched to enable users to visualize power lines, sketch work areas, and access critical safety resources. The platform integrates infrastructure data via ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS, allowing seamless collaboration and real-time access to location-specific information. The app empowers workers to plan operations safely around power lines, minimizing accidents and enabling proactive decision-making.
In its first year, the app achieved significant results, including a 33% reduction in agricultural accidental contacts, earning awards and widespread adoption. It continues to save lives, reduce property damage, and enhance operational safety for the utility and its customers.
