    Project Details

The University of Leeds and Capella Space have partnered on a project aimed at documenting and analyzing the significant climatic changes impacting the glaciers and snowpacks of the Himalayas and Karakoram regions, crucial water sources for millions. Utilizing Capella Space's advanced SAR satellite technology for detailed imaging and the University of Leeds' expertise in climate science, this collaboration focuses on establishing a comprehensive baseline dataset. This initiative prioritizes understanding the impacts of climate change, especially the transition of the Karakoram glaciers from mass gain to recession, which poses threats to water stability for the Indus River basin. The project's insights are intended to inform future conservation, management, and policy-making efforts, addressing the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies to safeguard these vital natural resources and the populations dependent on them.
