    Project Details

In response to the European Union's ambitious goal of becoming climate neutral by 2050, the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR Prague), led by Jiří Čtyroký, was tasked with enhancing the city's resilience to climate change. To meet this mandate, IPR Prague employed Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to develop a comprehensive plan that addressed urban heat islands, identified population densities, and complied with municipal regulations. By layering satellite images that highlighted areas prone to extreme temperatures with demographic data and regulatory boundaries, the team gained a holistic view of where to prioritize resources. This approach led to innovative solutions, such as planting vegetation and installing water features in unconventional locations like rooftops and beneath train tracks, effectively cooling down identified hotspots. These efforts not only mitigated the immediate effects of heat waves but also contributed to the city's long-term climate resilience goals.
