The Salt Savers program is an innovative pilot initiative introduced by the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) in a targeted section of its service area in south-central Wisconsin. The primary objective of this program is to advocate for salt reduction measures, outreach, and messaging regarding home water softeners, aiming to mitigate the issue of elevated salt concentrations in wastewater discharged to the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant (NSWTP). MMSD identified the widespread use of water softeners as a significant factor contributing to salt discharge, thus prompting the inception of this proactive initiative.
