Ground Movement Cadastre: Radar Interferometry for Post-Mining Monitoring in Germany

Source: Reutech Mining
The project leverages freely available Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar data to monitor ground deformations in post-mining regions of Germany, were land subsidence and uplift present risks to infrastructure and communities. By combining satellite radar interferometry (InSAR) with terrestrial levelling data, surveying and mapping authorities established the Ground Movement Cadastre, an official geospatial product that detects vertical displacements across wide areas. Unlike traditional levelling lines that provide measurements only along predefined paths, radar-based monitoring enables continuous, large-scale coverage, detecting new uplift zones and confirming stable ground regions. This framework represents a paradigm shift in geodetic reference practices, making monitoring more cost-effective, precise, and publicly accessible.
