In response to the recurring wildfire crisis in Sweden, particularly after significant fire events in 2014 and 2018, Swedish authorities identified a need for enhanced geospatial coordination to better manage firefighting efforts and improve crisis response. The project brought in Lantmäteriet's Geocell system, a mobile geospatial support solution operated by skilled GIS personnel, to provide live, operation-specific geographic data and map products at the regional crisis management headquarters. Within 24 hours of deployment, the system provided a unified, accurate, and up-to-date single source of information on fire status. By adding a standardized coordinate system, rescue teams could coordinate more efficiently, ensure accurate information was available in real-time, and distribute printed maps in large quantities to facilitate informed decision-making among crisis responders.
