    Project Details

The Invasive Species Center (ISC), located in Poreč, Croatia, initiated a GIS-driven project to address the growing challenge of mosquito infestation in the Istrian peninsula. The region’s unique climate and habitat diversity make it susceptible to invasive species like tiger mosquitoes, sea grapes, and the tree of heaven. The ISC aimed to map and monitor mosquito habitats, assess infestation levels, and develop strategies to prevent the entry of new species while controlling the spread of existing ones.

The workflow began with the creation of detailed data collection forms in the office, which included attributes such as infestation levels, biodiversity assessments, and habitat descriptions. Field teams equipped with smartphones and the MDC app collected data in remote areas, even without internet connectivity. Once synced, the data populated dynamic maps in the Map Editor, enabling real-time visualization and analysis.

These maps were then used for scientific analysis, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local authorities. The GIS Cloud platform’s ability to export and share data facilitated the dissemination of findings to policymakers, citizens, and other stakeholders. The ISC also leveraged the maps to secure new partnerships and expand their ecological monitoring initiatives.
