Seville, Spain has been named the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2023, a groundbreaking project is reshaping the management of urban tourism. Spearheaded by the Smart Tourism Office, in collaboration with the University of Seville, Galgus, and Bosch, this initiative focuses on addressing challenges arising from high tourist density in the Santa Cruz neighborhood, one of the city's most visited areas.
By employing advanced GIS technology, real-time monitoring sensors, and digital twin modeling, the project aims to enhance visitor management, alleviate congestion, and redirect tourist flows to under-visited areas, promoting a balanced and sustainable tourism model. The project collects large volumes of data through ten strategically placed Galgus Wi-Fi and Bosch optical sensors, which monitor pedestrian traffic patterns. This data feeds into Esri's ArcGIS system, creating detailed visualizations of tourist density and movements. A digital twin, a highly immersive 360-degree virtual model of the area was developed, enabling predictive analytics and strategic decision-making. This innovative approach not only ensures a better experience for tourists but also improves the quality of life for residents.
