CIMA+, a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm in Canada, embarked on a mission to perform high-precision surveys of electrical powerlines, focusing on the relocation of lines on Mistassini Island. The project aimed to address complex requirements, including the precise detection of the thinnest guard wire at the top of the powerline, accurate clearance measurements between wires and water levels, and an assessment of existing poles for reinforcement or removal.
By integrating UAV-based LiDAR technology, CIMA+ revolutionized the traditional surveying approach. An automated flight was conducted at 70 meters AGL, supplemented by a manual flight at approximately 55 meters AGL to ensure thorough data acquisition. The manual flight followed the elevation gradient of the powerlines, starting at a high point and descending gradually. This dual-mode operation allowed CIMA+ to capture all necessary data while adhering to stringent safety protocols.
