The City of Zwolle, situated amidst three rivers in the Netherlands, is renowned for its green spaces and sustainability efforts. To continue this legacy and address growing concerns over climate change, the city launched the Smart Zwolle Hub in 2018. Powered by ArcGIS Hub, this innovative platform enables seamless communication between the city and its citizens regarding key municipal initiatives and climate research. A core aspect of the project involves citizens actively contributing to the city's climate change research by using high-tech sensors to monitor air quality and environmental conditions. The SensHagen initiative, a network of sensors across Zwolle, collects data on air quality, temperature, and precipitation, which citizens can view and contribute to via an online portal. Additionally, citizens can report flooding events through an app, further involving the community in the city’s sustainability efforts.
