Austin, Minnesota, boasts a population of over 23,000 residents. Austin Utilities, a community-owned, not-for-profit municipal utility, serves the area by providing water, natural gas, and electricity. For many years, the utility stored its data in CAD format. However, due to increasing regulatory requirements for tracking and traceability, as well as the desire for various enhancements, Austin Utilities transitioned from AutoCAD to the ArcGIS platform. Subsequently, the data was migrated into Esri's Utility and Pipeline Data Model (UPDM), specifically tailored to the gas industry. The implementation of the ArcGIS Utility Network Management extension followed suit. These advancements, coupled with the additional capabilities of the ArcGIS platform, have positioned Austin Utilities to effectively address both present and future utility operation’s needs.
