Japan has an extensive railway network that consists of subways, light-track trolleys, and super-fast Shinkansen bullet trains that connect urban areas to rural villages. To manage the daily operations of public transportation and effectively manage railway equipment, the JR East Japan Group, the largest railway corporation in Japan, has decided to create a series of geographic information systems for railways. This system will be used to manage all the railroad facilities and will be accessible to the directors and subsidiaries of the JR East Japan Group.
