Empowering Civic Engagement through GIS-Based Storytelling: The City of Arlington's Data-Driven Transparency Initiative

The City of Arlington, Texas, embarked on a transformative initiative to make its voluminous city budget and key performance metrics (KPIs) more accessible and relatable to residents. This effort was inspired by the need to engage citizens effectively, foster transparency, and convey complex data in a digestible format. The project included an innovative animated Lego-based video to simplify budget communication and leveraged GIS technology to present KPIs and open data through intuitive dashboards. These dashboards showcased city priorities like road maintenance, litter cleanup, economic development, and recreational amenities. The initiative also enhanced open data usability by curating dashboards for socioeconomic insights, development tracking, public art mapping, and park locators. The project resulted in heightened civic engagement, increased understanding of city efforts, and more informed community participation in policymaking.
