The Italian Military Geographic Institute spearheaded a national cartographic project to design 1:350,000 scale maps for each of Italy’s 20 regions, targeting school pupils as the primary audience. The initiative aims to make geography, environment, and territorial knowledge accessible and engaging for students from an early age. The maps highlight natural and human-made features including altimetry, hydrography, borders, settlements, protected areas, transportation networks, and toponymy. Hypsometric colors, contour lines, elevation points, and shaded reliefs were carefully integrated to make elevation and landform comprehension intuitive. By merging official European geospatial datasets with regional sources, the maps ensure accuracy while remaining visually simple. This project encourages students to connect with their region, understand the environment, and recognize the interdependence between people and nature.
