Infrabel, the manager of Belgium’s rail infrastructure, is undergoing a digital transformation to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of its railway network. With 3,600 km of track and 10,000 switches to maintain, Infrabel has embraced a data-driven approach, incorporating digital tools and technologies for predictive maintenance. The organization digitized paper-based records and made the information accessible through a central SAP platform. In addition, digital rulers (a measuring system for S&C) and measuring trains equipped with Switch Measuring Systems (SMS) and Switch Video Systems (SVS) are used to automate and streamline the process, ensuring continuous and real-time monitoring of the track and switches under load conditions. The introduction of predictive maintenance leverages the power of big data, sensors, and machine learning to detect potential failures before they occur, leading to safer and more efficient rail transport.
