Upon nearing completion of the construction of a new railway line, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation begins to receive many as-built drawings and engineering documents from various contractors. These documents are crucial for the railway's operation and maintenance.

The use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) is an ideal solution for mapping, verifying, and retrieving the diverse facilities scattered along the railways in different geographic locations. In 2002, an open tender process was conducted, and the SuperMap platform was selected to develop the Engineering Facilities Information System (EFIS). This selection was due to its superior technology, high performance, and cost-effectiveness.
